From My Living Room to Yours: How Pretend Play Toys Became My Passion

In 2020, right in the middle of the pandemic, our family made a big move — from the bustling streets of Mumbai to the quieter corners of Gujarat. Like many others, we were adjusting to a new world. The times were uncertain, emotions were high, and routines were turned upside down.

At that time, I had a six-month-old baby in my arms and a curious little 3-year-old daughter by my side. Most of our days were spent indoors, and one of our favorite activities was playing kitchen-kitchen. She loved pretending to cook meals, serve chai, and host imaginary guests. But as we played, I realized something — there were barely any pretend play toys that reflected our Indian food and culture.

There were plenty of pizzas, burgers, and cupcakes… but where were the rotis, dosas, idlis, or sabzis?

That tiny moment sparked a big idea.

I decided to create something for her — and for all the children who love pretend play but don’t see their everyday food in toy form. I started small. From my living room, I began making calls to suppliers, collecting samples, and dreaming up designs during nap times. I found a talented illustrator who helped bring my ideas to life. Then came printing, sampling, and stitching.

But this journey wasn’t mine alone. I was lucky to work with a group of incredibly skilled women — mothers and homemakers — who were looking for ways to earn while staying home. They couldn’t step out due to family responsibilities, but they knew how to stitch beautifully. I would send them raw materials, and they would craft each piece with care and pride. Each toy they stitched not only supported my dream, but also brought them a source of income and joy.

That’s how The Small Wonderland began — not in a factory, but in homes just like yours and mine. It was born from love, built with hope, and stitched with stories.

From my living room to yours, I hope our toys bring the same joy to your little ones as they did to mine. Because when kids play with something they can relate to, something familiar, something desi — the magic feels a little more real.
